Newsflash - It could be London!
Summary
The London Health Commission have been working very closely with a
range of partners to develop a London portfolio bid to the Big Lottery
Fund Wellbeing
Programme. Our portfolio 'Well London' will tackle three of the
most important determinants
of health inequalities:
- poor diet,
- lack of physical
activity and
- poor mental
well-being,
Action will
focus on five themes:
- Food Poverty,
- Green Spaces,
- Mental Well-being,
- Children
and Young People,
- Culture and
Tradition.
Well London
will target and work with communities 'in need' to create healthier
lifestyles and improve their well-being. It will influence policy
makers and practitioners, at local and regional level, into thinking
and working with disadvantaged and excluded people and communities
in different, more effective ways.
Our portfolio
will be delivered by the Well London alliance, a coalition of the
Greater London Authority (GLA), London Health Commission (LHC),
Groundwork London, London Sustainability Exchange [LSx] and Central
YMCA.
This unique alliance
draws together strategic level influence, including all of the LHC
partner organisations, with extensive experience in successful
grass-roots community-led practice.
Our portfolio
will deliver:·
- community-led
projects, coordinated at the local level, which make real and
sustainable gains in the health and well-being of our most disadvantaged
communities and build their capacity to secure further gains;
- robust, evidence-based
models and benchmarks that will influence policy and practice
to secure real enhancements to well-being and reductions in health
inequalities across all communities in our capital city and beyond.
Delivery structure:

The Well London
portfolio will make big positive changes in communities most in
need London. We will coordinate and target all of our portfolio
activities, through our 5 themes, in 25 geographical communities
and communities of interest at the very local level. In the second
stage of the BLF bidding process (from November 2006) we will identify
the specific target communities based on routine data describing
deprivation and health indicators at the local community level and
the extent and nature of existing activities.
We will also
undertake intensive local community level consultation, current
activity mapping and planning for the delivery of Well London at
the local level. Within these communities, we will target our work
at the most disadvantaged and excluded, including children, young
people and their families, black, Asian and minority ethnic communities
and older people.
We will also
build the capacity of local organisations, including small, voluntary
sector community organisations within our target areas to enable
them to continue to work with the communities in different, more
effective ways.
Rigorous evaluation
and assimilation of learning from Well London will be used to influence
policy makers and practitioners in London, and beyond, into thinking
and working with disadvantaged and excluded communities in different,
more effective ways and will thus benefit many more people and communities
in need across London.
