The Commission was created from a partnership of organisations
that first came together in May 1999 to develop the London Health
Strategy.
The aim of the London Health Strategy was to support work to improve
health and reduce health inequalities at local and national levels,
by focusing on London-wide activities that could reinforce and boost
initiatives in London. The Strategy paid particular attention to
diversity and health inequalities, both between different groups
of people and between different parts of London.
Importantly, the London Health Strategy did not aim to cover every
health issue or area of need in London, most of which are better
addressed in individual localities and communities through a range
of health and other services. Instead the strategy focussed on key
areas that were agreed, following extensive consultation, as offering
the greatest potential to support efforts across all levels of activity
in the capital.
How was the Strategy developed?
The London Health Strategy was published in March 2000 following
wide-ranging consultation during 1999. This involved over 1,500
people from more than 300 organisations. Its development was initially
overseen by a multi-sectoral steering
group, which eventually formed a coalition for health and regeneration.
Information on the evidence feeding in to the development of the
strategy is available from our Publications
page.
Following consultation across London, the following headline priorities
were initially agreed by the London Health Strategy steering group,
and later adopted by the London Health Commission:
- Regeneration
- Inequalities
- Transport
- Black and minority ethnic health
In addition to these priorities, four supporting priorities were
agreed: health impact assessment, community involvement and engagement,
developing the new London Health Observatory and communicating the
London's Health work.
