LHC Newsflash - Issue 3
1 December 2006

Big Smoke Debate is won

The government has announced that from 1 July 2007 all workplaces in london skyline in cigarette ashEngland will be smokefree. Jennette Arnold, London Health Commission chair welcomed the announcement and said:

"Through our Big Smoke Debate initiative in 2003 the London Health Commission partnership gathered the views of over 40,000 Londoners and spoke out strongly on this issue. We made a significant contribution to the case for smokefree workplaces which prompted this legislative change."

There is a lot of work still to be done between now and July to ensure that London continues to lead the way on going smokefree. Smokefree workplaces is one of the four LHC Challenges for action. You can take up the LHC Challenge by registering with SmokeFree London via our website.

London's NHS went smokefree at the end of 2005 and LHC's SmokeFree London Forum is continuing to support the move to smokefree workplaces across all sectors in London.

Ends.
