LHC Newsflash Issue 4
21 December 2006 - It could be London!

Big Lottery Fund (BLF) today announced that Well London is going through to stage two bidding to its Wellbeing programme. ‘Well London’ is an ambitious five-year programme that will work with people at a very local level to transform health in some of London’s most disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

Jennette Arnold, LHC chair said “This is a fantastic opportunity for London and I’m really Jennette Arnold portraitexcited that Well London has got through to the next stage of bidding. The money isn’t in the bank yet and we need to build on the huge amount of work that partners have put in already. We’ve now got until beginning of March to engage with local people and new partners from the public, private and voluntary and community sectors to develop our Well London programme so that it will secure the Big Lottery funding and deliver long-term, sustainable change for people living in some of our most deprived neighbourhoods”.

A unique new alliance has been forged between the London Health Commission, Central YMCA, Groundwork London, London Sustainability Exchange and University of East London that brings together strategic influence and grassroots community-led experience. Communities will decide for themselves how the money is to be spent, by assessing their own needs and priorities for action and we will work with them to develop creative projects that meet their needs and aspirations. This is the first time that this type of approach has been tried on a regional scale.
